What did you learn in Primary?

Today, after dinner, Molly asked me if she could do two chores  I said sure.  After dinner, she and Roland rotate the tasks of clearing and wiping the table and sweeping the kitchen floor. 
She did both of those jobs this evening, and when I praised her, she told me in Primary, they learned about 'taking two steps'  "Like, if you are asked to do one chore, do two!"  I said, yes, Jesus taught that.  She was pretty proud she'd applied that principle in real life.  I am pretty proud to have a little girl who tries so hard to be good.  She also told me "This means I'll be a good mom!"  I concur.

How old is Jack now?

People are starting to ask me this an extra lot, because he is starting to mostly walk around, very little crawling now.  He turned one early this month, this is a photo from the family birthday party he shared with Lillian.  I have declared this a new family tradition, since their birthdays are less than a week apart.

Jack is a fun and funny guy.  At the beginning of Gospel Doctrine this week, he freaked out people by going and messing with the outlets.  Then as the teacher began the lesson Jack toddled up and started addressing him in his silly baby talk.  So everyone laughed.  So Jack laughed (he loves to laugh).  So the class laughed.  So Jack laughed some more.  So the class really was laughing now.  So he and I left.  Frankly, he was being adorable, but we still couldn't stay.  He started talking loudly to the teacher as soon as the poor man tried to begin again (never work with children or animals--W.C. Fields).

So did they start school?

They did.

How is her quilt coming?

I've realized one of the down sides to making things for gifts is that you can't post the progress as you go, in case someone might actually look at your blog!

I have no such compunctions about this little nine-patch Kari is making.

The blocks are sewn together, the borders are added, and we've basted the backing, batting, and quilt top together!  Next up: hand quilting lessons.

Is this the obligatory first day of school post?

No, it is not.  But we did have a backpack modelling session on Labor Day.

Lillian can't wait for Joy School to start.

Roland is so kind and patient with his two youngest siblings.  He and Lillian are special buds (and roommates).

Why would you cut it?

Why?  I'll tell you why, because the back is a rat's nest that I have to coerce and condition every day trying to get it under control.

I don't have any desire to subtract any length, I just want all the split ends off!

I made appointments with our long time hairdresser (she's been cutting my hair all my life), and Molly and Lillian had a date with some scissors.

The day before, Wesley heard that I planned to get her hair cut, and he yelled about it.

That morning, Lillian told me "I'm not getting my hair cut".  I said, "That's okay, we'll just get it trimmed a little." 

She responded "I'm not getting my hair trimbled".

I tried not to worry, and got us all to the salon.  Molly went first, and she was praised for how well she sat, how good she looked, and she received her due treat from the hairdresser, D.  J. 

Lillian said, "I'm not getting my hair cut."  We tried to coax her, offered her rewards, but she stood firm.

In retrospect, watching the movie Tangled all summer maybe wasn't the best introduction to haircuts.

I asked D.J. "What do you think?"  She responded that in her experience, it was better just to wait.

That's what I thought too.

 

But I think Molly looks nice and groomed!

Have you seen The Pajama Game?

So we love the musical "The Pajama Game".  We've watched the movie, which is streaming on Netflix, and I checked out the CD of the original Broadway version, which shares a lot of cast with the movie, but leaves out Doris Day, who is fine, but is not the singer that Janis Page is. 

I make my kids watch musicals with me, working to indoctrinate them as early as possible!

Molly asked her aunt Lindsay if she'd seen the film.  Roland chimed in "It's funny and has great songs", which is so true.  He continued: "It's an old movie, from the nineteens."  We all had to laugh at that phrasing from our millennial child, born in 2002, so he asked, "Is it from the eighteens?"  It's delightful to me that the 'nineteens' are so far removed from his experience, it can be used to encapsulate that whole period of history.
